Purpose: Helps move fingers up and down. Facts:The tops of the metacarpals form the knuckles where they join to the wrist. They are covered with connective tissue. The five metacarpals are called thumb metacarpal, index metacarpal, middle metacarpal, ring metacarpal, and small metacarpal. Definition:The phalanges are bones that exist on each finger and toe. There are 56 phalanges in the human body, with fourteen phalanges on each hand and foot. Three phalanges are present on each finger and toe, with the exception of the thumb and large toe, which possess only two.
